2007 Recipient and Nominees

2007 Harvey R. Durham Freshman Advocate Award Recipient: Ms. Micki Early

Micki R. Early, director of orientation at Appalachian State University, has received the 2007 Harvey R. Durham for Outstanding Freshman Advocate Award. "I have been so fortunate to work with so many people who work every day to support our students," said Early. "None of us would be successful in our jobs without each others' support."

Joni Petschauer, recipient of the 2005 Durham Award, said, "If indeed it is the beginning that determines the end, then the success enjoyed by so many of Appalachian's students can be traced to the hand of Micki Early." Petschauer said that Early helps unite the work of many individuals and offices to support the first-year student.

Early has worked at Appalachian for 25 years, all in service to students. After earning a B.S.B.A. degree with a concentration in marketing from Appalachian in 1976, Early worked eight years with the N.C. Department of Insurance. She returned to Appalachian in 1983 as administrative assistant to the director of Upward Bound on campus. She later served as administrative assistant to the director of the Learning Assistance Program and to the dean of the General College.

She was assistant director of orientation from 1986-1998, and was named director of orientation in 1998.

Through her current position, Early works to provide clear communication with all new students entering the university, develops Web and print materials welcoming new students to campus, oversees hiring of student orientation undergraduate leaders and develops training materials for them, and plans and oversees the budget for new student orientation.

Patrick Setzer, director of marketing communications at Appalachian, wrote, "Micki's attention to the needs of our students and the level of commitment she contributes as an administrator is truly unparalleled on our campus." Setzer added, "Her diligence, hard work, creative insight, and forward thinking attitude has made Appalachian's student orientation program a model for many peer institutions."

Early has trained and worked with hundreds of student orientation leaders over the years, including Matt Cobb and Jennifer Maltba. They wrote in their letter of nomination that, "Micki Early has shown remarkable and exceptional guidance and commitment as director of Phase 1 Orientation. Without her constant support, the incoming students would not have as great of an experience or be prepared for their (first) semester."
